Caring for Your First Orchids

Don't You Know I'm Hungry?

How often should I water it?

Not too often! Most orchids like to be watered well, then to dry out somewhat. Some plants seem to like to be bone dry before being watered again. Others, however, should not be allowed to become so dry. Explicit details will be found in “Caring for Your First Orchid & More”.

Whatever kind of orchid you have, don’t let the compost (the stuff it’s planted in) get soggy from staying too wet too long, because the roots will rot.

What do I feed it?

DO NOT feed it ordinary plant foods, especially those that contain urea. The orchid can’t use it, and it may burn the roots. See section for each variety in e-book.

When should I be fertilizing it?

Once a month on an average: a little less in the winter, a little more when there is active growth, and when days are longer, warmer and brighter. Yes, details on what and how are described in "Caring for Your First Orchid & More".

Are any orchids fragrant?

You bet! Perhaps a quarter of all orchids are deliciously fragrant, some dramatically, some almost offensively so - but the latter won’t be commonly for sale. Many Cattleya plants, especially those with very frilly lips, are often endowed with a heliotrope-like fragrance, but it is variable in its occurrence.

I’m allergic to most plants, what about orchids?

Most flower allergies are sensitivities to the nearly microscopic grains of pollen that float free. It is very unlikely you will exhibit allergy to orchid pollen, because the tiny pollen particles in the orchid family are clustered together in two to eight small (2-3 millimeters --- an eighth of an inch at most) masses that do not float free.
